Of creaking chairs and internet
Its new media time again! The interesting thing about newer media is how it is changing the anthropology of the human race. The skill of Judgement i think is extremely important when working in the new media. Other wise you will have people believing everything they hear on the internet. Yah... it is potentially very dangerous...

Turn on the comments
I was wondering why my staff especially the "sisters" didn't comment on the learning blog. Well its because I forgot to turn on the "Comments" option. Silly me, waiting for comments. Alright fire away. Well I do want to comment about the earlier series of posts during the Assessing Learning Environment module. Since then I was involved in some more Curriculum transformation discussions. Learning Environment today is absolutely vital. So to all my people in the team. Let's learn!

Cronbach Alphas & T-Tests
Most of the lesson today was about preparing the Group study report on the application of WIHIC for assessing the learning environment in this module. Whilst compiling the results, we went through Cronbach Alphas and T-tests using SPSS Ver 16 which i thought was actually quite good and useful. Hrmm we should upgrade to Ver 16. I always think that rigour is useful although i think our training institutes are not equiped to run this. Loading SPSS software for them is one thing, getting them to design the set-up properly is another issue. This convinces me that perhaps the Assessing and Improving Learning Environment module is something that we should embed into the SAF Instructor Roadmap. Haha an evil thought just floated through my head... maybe C + D should run the WIHIC and submit a report for the Instr LD Prep workshops we run.. (haha, are you guys reading this blog?)

Experiencing Learning
"What Is Happening In This Classroom?" (WIHIC). Haha if i said this during a workshop it would sound as if I was scolding the participants. Haha well it is supposed to be a validated Survey to assess the Learning Environment in classrooms (see links under resources to Psychology of Learning Environment and WIHIC). I think understanding Learning Environment is important, something which we can always do better at. Once again I do ponder very hard as to why the S + S team is thinking so hard to build instruments for me... Oh of course I agree that we need contextualised questions to measure the impact of the LD initiatives we implement, but at least for the School LD we can explore how WIHIC can be deployed. Haha I pose this question to the 'two sisters'. Comments? =) (Don't say now just because it sounds like more work).

Of Fish(er)s and Moos...
My current thoughts about the Assessing and Designing Learning Module: Well it seems quite simple. The central idea is that psycho-social interactions in the environment is an important contributor to Learning (see the stuff on Murray, Lewin, Fisher, Moos and Wubbels). The person-environment fit speaks most to me because it brings me back to the ADDIE model of instructional design. How often have we asked the learner what they prefer for their learning environment? What are my teaching styles? Reflecting on this I think there is a scope to explore Teaching Style Inventories to improve the self-awareness for instructors (see under Resources section)
Instruments for Assessing Learning
This morning we went through Moo's work on the dimensions to measure to assess Learning. Although I am not sure if the various inventories that sprung as a result of it are valid or reliable, it seems intuitive to me that maybe for the workshops we run in the Sch LD team, we should pick up some of these inventories to use instead of the usual feedback questions which we designed ourselves. I think it would be good to bring some scientific rigour into the collection of feedback on the efficacy of our workshops. The 'Sisters' should pick up on this. Similarly, I was thinking of the instruments which Sean and Sharon did up for me. Maybe we can blend of these inventories into it? Worth considering I would say.

Reflection & Learning thru Blogs
James Peh shared his experiences on facilitating learning with his students through blogs. Haha 1st thing that occurred to me is that his slides should be used to explain how we might want to continue our LD Learning System. Not bad Not bad. SLDT guys could also explore how we can blend this into our instructional methods. See the hyperlink to their site G.R.A.C.E. under the resources.
Psychology Resources
The American Psychologist Association Psych Net is a good resource for all psychology related abstracts. However you would have to pay if you want to download a copy of the full text article. There is also a good resource of articles about the psychology of learning. The link is under the resources section of the blog.

Learning about 'Learning' & LD?
Learning about 'Learning' & LD? What's that you may say? Well, I thought that I would start this blog for myself and the people in my work community to basically share ideas, thoughts and theories. Haha don't be surprised if i gripe about Learning and LD here too.
